About Your Therapist.

Meet Sophie Capern!

Sophie is a warm and invested psychologist who prioritises authenticity and inclusivity. Sophie is passionate about reducing the shame and stigma surrounding mental health and help seeking, and is committed to providing a welcoming and open space where people can show up as themselves and engage in genuine self-expression and exploration, without judgement.

Sophie provides psychological treatment and support using strengths based and person-centered approaches, meaning she respects each person’s unique story and lived experiences and tailors her therapeutic approach according to their specific strengths and needs, using a range evidence-based therapeutic modalities (listed below). Central to Sophie’s approach is the appreciation that each person’s individual mental health and wellbeing is profoundly influenced by the the experiences they have with others in their lives, and the world in which they live.

Sophie has experience working with a diverse range of presenting concerns as a psychologist in both community and private practice settings; providing individual therapy, practising group facilitation, teaching and conducting qualitative research centering LGBTQIA+ lived experiences.

Beyond SLC Psychology, Sophie also works in a sexual health and intimacy psychology clinic and as a sessional university lecturer, teaching postgraduate counselling subjects with a focus on lifespan development, diversity and trauma.

Sophie Capern is an AHPRA registered general psychologist and a member of the Australian Association of Psychologists (AAPi).
